APRIL

Choosing Connection Over Control

April Reflection by Brooke Bacon

Spring is a season of the earth waking up, stretching toward the sun, and reminding us that growth happens naturally when given space. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much pressure we put on ourselves to heal, to fix, to improve, to be better. But when we focus too much on healing, we create this unspoken belief that something is wrong with us. That we are broken and in need of repair.

Instead, what if we focused on connection?

Connection with our bodies, the way they move, breathe, and support us.

Connection with our environment, the warmth of the sun, the feeling of bare feet on the ground.

Connection with the people we love, our children, our partners, our community.

Since the birth of my daughter in October, adjusting to life with five kids has been a lot. I’ve caught myself grasping for control, trying to keep everything just right so I don’t feel overwhelmed. But control is a funny thing. The more I try to hold on tightly, the more I lose the very thing I need most...connection. When I’m too focused on making things run smoothly, I miss the small moments with my kids: the way my toddler reaches for my hand and wants to help, or the way my older son lights up when I really listen.

Healing, growing, is not a task to complete. It’s a side effect of being present, of connecting deeply with what is, rather than trying to force what should be.

So this month, I invite you to choose connection over control with me.

Take a moment to pause. Breathe. Ask yourself how you really feel, not how you should feel, not how your past patterns expect you to feel, but how you truly, deeply feel in this moment. That’s one of the most authentic things you can do.

And as Mary Oliver says, “Keep some room in your heart for the unimaginable.” Because when you surrender control and open yourself to connection, life has a way of surprising you in the most beautiful ways.

A challenge for April: Find one small way each day to connect, with yourself, with nature, with someone you love. Let go of trying to make it perfect. Just be in it. See what unfolds.

I’d love to hear what this brings up for you, what connection feels like in your life right now.

So much love to you space! Xoxo - Brooke Bacon
